Band and Orchestra Caroling Field Trip
7th and 8th grade Orchestra Musicians and 8th grade Band Musicians had a wonderful time spreading holiday cheer at the Sunrise of Willowbrook Retirement Community this week! The students performed holiday tunes for the residents, and were able to pet some furry friends in between songs.

7th Grade Science - Electricity and Circuits
This week our young engineers began their study of electricity and circuits. We learned all the parts of a simple circuit and practiced constructing switches and how to use wire cutters. This is in preparation of our upcoming labs - homemade flashlights and our junkyard wars with electromagnets! See some of the results below of our lights shining! Don’t forget to go out on a clear night this month and see the “Gimined Meteor Showers”!
7th Grade Science - Magnetic Fields
This week in 7th grade Science, our young scientists are beginning trimester 2 by switching gears from chemistry to electricity/magnetism. Students studied how magnets are created, how repulsion and attraction occurs, and learned how useful they are in various types of applications including roller coasters! Our young engineers completed a lab using iron filings to plot out and sketch the magnetic fields with their new partners…check out the results below!

4 Highlands Musicians Accepted into ILMEA Honor Groups
Congrats to our four Highlands musicians, Haylin W, Kazunori O, Ben H ad Tommy M, who auditioned and made it into the ILMEA honor choir, orchestra, band and jazz band. They practiced and performed with these groups the first two weekends in November, along with 300 other students musicians from around the Chicago area. We are so proud of you!!
7th Grade Science - Acids and Bases Lab
Grade 7 Science - End of Trimester 1 Wrap Up
Our final week of trimester 1 in 7th grade Science concluded with our young chemists learning about of acids and bases. We compared the various types of ph levels in our foods and products we use everyday. Students were able to use the test tubes and ph paper to check the acidity levels of some popular drinks, including the water at Highlands! We are safe and good to go, so drink up!
Check out the results from our final chemistry lab!
Abilities Day at Highlands Middle School
On Wednesday, 11/1, our 5th and 6th grade students participated in Abilities Day. Students were able to learn more about individuals with different learning styles and abilities. They were such a good audience and exemplified what it means to be a Hornet - so kind and respectful. Thank you to our partners at LADSE, SEASPAR, and NADS for coming out and creating engaging and accessible learning opportunities for our students. Also, a special thank you Mrs. Melissa Luetkehans for organizing such a wonderful day!
7th Grade Science - Breaking the bonds that holds water together!
This week in 7th grade Science, our young chemists finished learning about covalent bonds and electrons by conducting an experiment using the process of electrolysis to break about the bonds that hold hydrogen and oxygen to form water! We used two pencils a 9 volt battery and some salt water to help separate the hydrogen and oxygen back into the air!
Check out the bubbles on the pencils that represent those elements!
7th Grade Science - Density
This week in 7th grade Science, our chemists measured and calculated the density of various liquids and determined whether they will float on or sink in water using real world situations. Some of the tools we used were the triple beam balance scales and graduated cylinders. A few cross curricular skills were shared in this lab as our chemists utilized their math skills to calculate mass, volume and density using data tables and decimals!
