Highlands Elementary School

Message From The Principal

Welcome to our Highlands Family!

I am delighted and honored to be in my seventh year as principal of Highlands Elementary School. I, along with our Highlands staff, am looking forward to a great school year. By empowering students as partners in learning, the District 106 community fosters academic ownership, dynamic learning experiences, and empathetic citizens.

Our District 106 vision is to create an environment where all students will learn to think critically and be effective communicators, collaborators, and problem solvers, focusing on creating a successful future for all. We are fortunate to have an amazing group of teachers, specialists, and support staff who are student-centered and can help us achieve this vision. To realize our vision, we have created challenging and meaningful instructional programming focused on student growth in all areas of learning, including language and communication, mathematics, science, history, the arts, technology, physical fitness, and social-emotional health. We are dedicated to providing an environment that is safe, nurturing, and responsive to the needs of the whole child.

We are very fortunate to have an incredibly strong parent community focused on bringing various engaging opportunities and experiences to all students. Both our Parent Teacher Council and our District 106 Educational Foundation dedicate great resources and support to our students and families. I’m excited to work with both our PTC and the Educational Foundation to continue the tradition of creating an engaging and well-rounded learning environment for every student. If you are not currently a member of our PTC or the Educational Foundation, please consider joining these great organizations.

We aim to create a welcoming environment for all our Highlands families. Please feel free to stop in or give us a call should you have any questions about the school, upcoming events, programming, curriculum, or your student’s needs. Also, don’t forget to visit our school website, Schoology site, Facebook, and X pages for regular announcements, events, and updates on what is happening at the Highlands.

We are very excited about this new school year and look forward to working with you to create the best learning experience for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Ms. Laura Magruder
Principal

We understand that the passing of a loved one can be especially difficult for children and that they may experience a range of emotions or have questions that are hard to address. To help you and your family navigate this challenging time, we’ve created Bereavement Bags.
