3rd Graders are Electrical Engineers

Our 3rd graders have been learning about circuits in Steam class.  The students created an electrical pathway with copper tape and a coin battery which lit up an LED bulb. 

2nd Grade Two-Dimensional Shapes

In 2nd grade we are beginning our geometry unit. Students used geo-boards to build and describe attributes of two-dimensional shapes. They did a great job discussing how many sides and angles each shape had! 

Sharing Survival Narrative Stories

4th Graders finished writing their narrative survival stories! Then students did reading rotations to share their stories with their classmates!

Insect Study

ECE is starting to learn about insects.  At Table Time we rolled a die and added the corresponding number of spots to some ladybugs.

First and Third Grade Astronomy

First grade and third grade used knowledge from our reading units on astronomy to  collaborate and create a book all about space!

7th Grade Science - Bumper Car Lab

In 7th grade Science, our young engineers have been hard at work studying Newton's 3 Laws of Motion.  In this lab, students were challenged to analyze and calculate the effects of mass on a rolling car that collides with another object to measure speed, distance, and force.  They were then asked to graph the results from their data tables and collaborate together on their results.

Congrats to our Solo and Ensemble Participants

Congrats to our 17 band members that participated in the LT Solo and Ensemble festival on March 11.  All of our Highlands participants received either a Superior or Excellent rating.  Thanks for making Highlands proud!  

Summer School and 2023-2024 Registration Now Open

Registration for Summer School classes and for the 2023-2024 school year have been combined into one process. Registration can be completed on the District 106 website by going to Students -> Registration (you must be logged in as a parent.)

• Registration will be open from March 24 - April 16 (11:59 p.m.).
• Registration is only available online.
• Payments by credit card, check, or cash are accepted. Payment is due immediately for Summer School classes and by August 23 for the rest of the registration fees.

Colonial Times in Kindergarten

Kindergarten students are beginning to explore the daily lives of people from colonial times and how different they were from students' present-day life experiences. The background knowledge students are building in this unit is preparing them to understand specific historical events that took place during colonial times. This week we got to reenact a “Trip to Town” and what that might look like for colonial people with the focus being on bartering and trade. Each student was given an item from either a farm or tradesperson and decided if it belonged in town or in the country. Then everyone took turns trading their items for something in town they might need. What a great way to travel back in time!

Measuring Madness

Second-grade students wrapped up their measuring and graphing unit by creating their own kites with different-sized tails. Then, they went around the classroom and measured all of the tails and graphed them in a bar graph. 

Art Smart Fun!

First grade participated in Art Smart this week. Students learned about different ways masks are used. Students then used clay to create and decorate their own masks.
