Summer School Science 11:30-1:00 - Slime and

Our young scientists were hard at work and had a blast making some ooey, gooey slime in class last week!  We also incorporated a little art with science by making some color diffusion wheels using common kitchen products.

Summer School Science 9:30-11:00- Microscopes

Our young scientists had a great time exploring the microscopic world during their summer school courses.  Students learned how microscopes work and even which careers utilize this amazing tool.  We also explored various plant, bacterial, and animal premade slides and even went on an outdoor journey to a creek to see what critters and plant life may be living in the ecosystem!

Superintendent's Contract

The LaGrange Highlands School District 106 Board of Education is pleased to announce the approval of a five-year contract with John Munch to continue as the district’s superintendent. The contract was approved at the June 20, 2023, regular meeting and will run from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2028.

John became superintendent of District 106 in July 2021. During his tenure as superintendent, John’s major accomplishments include the following:

  • Implemented a successful return-to-school plan at the start of the 2021 allowing students to return to in-person, full-time learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Successfully led the collaborative negotiations with the Highlands Association of Teachers (HAT) resulting in a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement between the District and HAT. Using a detailed analysis of comparable districts, the negotiations produced a contract which allows us to recruit and retain high-quality educators, while ensuring long-term financial stability for the district. We are pleased John was able to lead these amicable negotiations which will have a positive impact on our students and community for years to come.
  • Implemented a data-driven School Improvement Planning Process for our district focusing on individual student achievement and needs.
  • Successfully led the building addition and renovation project slated to be completed for fall 2023. The construction project broke ground in fall 2022 and is expected to be completed on time and under budget under John’s leadership. We look forward to a ribbon cutting and open house this fall for our District 106 community.
  • Implemented a capital financing plan in a volatile economic environment for our planned school addition and renovation by leveraging existing financial reserves, new bonds, and careful budgeting and planning for the new facilities.
  • Strategically staffed the district with high-quality educators and administrators to ensure the best education possible for students in the district.

John has made a huge impact on our school community. We are thrilled to share this news of a five-year contract with John and look forward to collaborating with him over the coming years. John’s commitment to the district and our students is remarkable, and his vision for what Highlands can achieve is inspiring. The Board of Education wishes to thank John for his work to date and congratulate him on this next step with District 106.

ILMEA BAND Audition Music (Fall 2023)

Attention all interested future 6th-8th grade band students!  The Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) provides an excellent honor band opportunity for students looking for a challenge and to extend their music experience outside of our Highlands band community.  See the attached link for auditions music and scales.  Auditions are in the fall, but the summer is  great time to get started practicing this music!  This is a one day honor band, so low commitment, but an excellent experience!

Let me know if you have any questions.

4th Grade Roller Coasters

The fourth graders did an amazing job on their roller coasters.  It was part of their force and motion unit in science.  They worked together as a class to build the foundation, the tracks and create a theme all made out of paper!! Their goal was to create a roller coaster with the longest marble ride.  Way to go 4th Graders!

The Highlands Hornets 8th grade softball team wrapped up their season this week with an undefeated record of 8-0.
