During these lessons, students are learning to:
• Understand that fractions represent equal parts of a whole
• Identify and create fractions using pictures and models
• Show fractions on a number line
• Explain what the numerator and denominator mean
• Notice when two fractions represent the same amount (equivalent fractions)
• Compare fractions using models and reasoning
We spend a lot of time having students draw, model, and talk through their thinking, which helps them really understand how fractions work.
A few easy ways you can connect this learning at home:
• Ask your child to describe fractions when sharing food (pizza, brownies, apples, etc.)
• Ask questions like: “How many equal parts are there?” or “What fraction did you eat?”
• Have them explain how they know two fractions might represent the same amount.
Fractions can feel like a big new idea at first, but students are doing a great job building their understanding step by step.
