
Kindergarten Team Update
We had a fun week together with tie dying shirts, meeting the first grade teachers and our field trip to Brookfield Zoo. Thank you to the parents who volutneered with and chaperoned. The kids had a wonderful day with their friends at the zoo.
We are looking forward to Field Day on Monday. Be sure to send your child with sunblock and a water bottle. Consider sending a hat or sunglasses as well. We will take water breaks and there will even be a mister set up.
Kindergartners will sign yearbooks on Tuesday as a grade level and with their 4th grade buddies. These will come home by the last day of school. Lots of things will be coming home until the last day of school so please clean them out daily. The teachers have a special things for each child on the last day of school so your child will still need their backpack on that day.
what are we Learning
Skills:
We are currently working on long vowels. Students have been working hard learning new spelling patterns. We are reading stories about Scotts adventures and answering comprehension questions with complete sentences. We have been learning lots of new trick words in Unit 10 as well.
Knowledge:
We are writing daily about different summer activities. Students are making sure they have a capital letter, finger spaces, and punctuation. Students are creating pictures to match their writing with details.
Math:
We are reviewing all we have learned this year. Students are practicing addition and subtraction skills.

Kindergarten Team Update
Kindergarten enjoyed their celebratory popcorn party from the PTC for being the grade level who collected the most food items for the Westchester Food Pantry earlier this year.

We are looking forward to taking our field trip to the Brookfield Zoo on May 29th. Please don't forget to have your child wear their Highlands t-shirt and send a brown bag lunch with a disposable water bottle that day to school.
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?
Skills:
We are currently working in Unit 10, exploring long vowel sounds. Students are practicing reading stories about Scott and answering comprehension questions. Please have your child continue to practice reading the decodable stories that come home as homework.

Knowledge:
We are finishing up our Presidents and American Symbols unit. We have enjoyed learning about U.S. presidents who have made an impact in our country. We are so excited to start our animal study unit next week. Every day we will be focusing on a different animal and writing about the animals we are investigating in our notebooks.
Math:
In math, we are reviewing everything we've learned this year. We are wrapping up our iReady lessons and next week we will take our iReady assessment and then start our deep dive into our Ocean Review reviewing all of our math skills we have learned this year.

What are we learning?
Skills:
We have completed unit 9 where we focused on uppercase letters. We learned when to use uppercase letters and how to properly form them. We practiced making complete sentences and worked on our reading fluency. We are beginning Unit 10, our last unit! In unit 10, we will learn about long vowels and vowel teams. Please have your child continue to practice reading the decodable stories that comes home as homework. Our latest stories follow a two characters Zack and Ann.
Knowledge:
Students will focus on two of the Founding Fathers of the United States: George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. They will also continue learning about the lives and impact of other U.S. presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Barack Obama. In this domain, students will hear a story about the carving of Mount Rushmore, which commemorates four of the five presidents they will learn about. Students will also focus on written communication by drawing detailed pictures, exchanging feedback with peers, and writing short phrases and sentences.

Knowledge:
During unit 9, students will explore the voyages of Columbus and the Pilgrims. Students will learn about key aspects of both voyages, such as how long the journeys were and how Europeans interacted with Native Americans. In addition, the Read-Alouds emphasize the motives that prompted both Columbus and the Pilgrims' Voyages. Students will describe and compare and contrast the voyages, creating pictures and writing sentences to communicate their understanding.

Kindergarten Team Update
- Valentines boxes are needed for Friday, February 13th!
- Please remember to send gym shoes daily. If your child wears boots or other shoes to school, please make sure they bring gym shoes for PE.
- Students will be going outside for recess whenever the “feels like” temperature is 15 degrees or above. Please make sure students are prepared for cold days with jackets, hats and gloves.

Knowledge:
The next unit we studied in Amplify this month has been about Seasons and Weather! We learned that different regions of Earth experience different weather patterns throughout the year. Students also discussed characteristics of each of the four seasons. One of our favorite activities has been writing about our favorite season and the reasons why! Up next is Pilgrims & Columbus.
