World Read Aloud Day
World Read Aloud Day happens annually on February 1. Millions around the globe use this day to celebrate the power of reading aloud to others. We celebrated World Read Aloud Day in the district today as our 7th graders from Mrs. Clark's and Mrs. Murphy's LA classes read to our elementary students throughout the day. It was wonderful seeing our middle school students visiting elementary classrooms. Thank you to everyone who participated in this great activity.
National Reading Day
Second graders celebrated National Reading Day with some good, old-fashioned buddy reading!
ECE learns to sew!
As ECE continues to study "Clothes", we are learning to sew. Students used a sewing machine to make their own cloth bags.
Thinking with our Eyes
Kindergarteners are becoming social detectives. Today students listened to the story Thinking with our Eyes and practiced thinking with their eyes. Miss Burke’s kindergarteners are thinking with their eyes about what the aliens in the story might want to do with a pair of cowboy boots... Great job social detectives!
First Grade at the DuPage Children's Museum
First grade had a blast at the DuPage Children's Museum yesterday. They got to create their own creatures, build in the workshop, and experiment with water, wind, and bubbles!
ECE is Learning about Clothing
ECE is learning all about clothing. This includes how to take care of our clothes. We are pretending to wash, dry, fold and even iron our clothes!
4th Grade and Kindergarten Buddies
We truly enjoy our kindergarten buddy times in 4th Grade! We have done so many fun and amazing activities with our buddy this past month. Last week the 4th graders in 4SZ helped their buddy solve math problems to crack the code in their SNOWMAN ESCAPE ROOM! The kids all had so much fun in solving clues in our classrooms and in the hallway to try and FREE Freezie the Snowman before he melted!

Congrats to our 8th Grade Boys' Basketball Team!
A big congratulations to our 8th grade boys' basketball team. The boys beat McClure last night in the championship game of the annual Hodgkins Tournament to end their perfect season. They won 49-35 and brought home their second third trophy of the season. We cannot wait to add this team to our list of champions here at Highlands!
Thank you to the students, staff, and parents that supported our teams this season. A special thank you to our cheerleaders for their support and spirit throughout the season.
7th Grade Science - Soldering and Electricity
This week in 7th grade Science, our young engineers were studying electricity and circuits to complement our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) unit. We examined various careers, such as electrical engineering and electronics, how to calculate amps, volts, and ohms, and even learned the art of soldering. Check out the pics below of our young engineers in action!

Our boys' basketball teams participated in the Hodgkins Basketball Tournament this weekend.
7th grade finished in 3rd overall after two well-played and hard-fought games. A huge thank you to Mac McCarthy and Mr. Stetson Steele for stepping in and stepping up to support the team, and helping them to end their season on a high note.
Our 8th graders also played two games - successfully beating both Westchester and Gurrie to land them in the Championship round. The Championship game is scheduled for this Wednesday evening, 1/18 at 7:30 pm at LT North in the Fieldhouse.
