Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, & Create!

ECE is studying Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle. Students are creating many new things using recycled materials. This student drew a plan & is making a robot.

Join us for the Highlands Middle School production of High School Musical Jr!

A cast and crew of over 100 students, led by Mrs. Stephanie Jost, will inspire you with messages of friendship, self-discovery, and teamwork. 

Adapted for young performers, this sixty-minute musical includes favorite songs such as "Get'cha Head in the Game," "Stick to the Status Quo,"
and "We're All in This Together."

You will be singing and cheering along with the Wildcats as superstar-athlete Troy and science-whiz Gabriella navigate the cliques of East High.

Enjoy this upbeat throwback to the ins and outs of high school!

Where does our trash go?

ECE has started a unit called "Reduce, Reuse and Recycling."  We will be learning about where our garbage goes, how we can reuse materials and what can be recycled.  Ms. Melissa's class read "Trashy Town" and used props to act out the story.

HMS Crowns Spelling Bee Champion!

C-O-N-G-R-A-T-S to sixth grader Will P. who won the Highlands Middle School Spelling Bee this week! He will represent HMS and compete against other local winners at the West 40 Local Bee in Broadview on Thursday, March 9th. Sixth graders Natalia R. and Alex P. were runners up and will serve as our alternates. Well done, H-O-R-N-E-T-S! 

7th Grade Science - Electromagnetic Derby

Electronics shop class was happening this week in 7th Grade Science!  Our young electrical engineers learned how to properly wire an electrical circuit, solder, and create a working electromagnet in our annual "Junkyard Wars".  The competition to pick up as many scrap pieces of metal was fierce, but great camaraderie and engineering skills were evident by all!

First graders are 100 days smarter! Students spent the day doing fun math and reading activities related to the number 100.

ISBE Announces the 2023 Those Who Excel Award Winners

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has honored 490 Illinoisans for their extraordinary contributions to education across the state through its annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards. This year two of those awardees come from District 106.

Highlands' own, Mrs. Lauren Fountas, received an award of Meritorious Service in the category for Educational Support Personnel.

And, Mr. Stetson Steele, received an award of Special Recognition in the category for Admin.

The annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities. ISBE will celebrate the awardees at a banquet on April 29.
 
"Illinois educators get up every day and perform one of the most difficult jobs in our state—and these excellent teachers, volunteers, and administrators honored by ISBE went above and beyond that already exceptional call to serve," said Governor JB Pritzker. "I'm thrilled to recognize teachers alongside librarians, custodians, volunteers, and other support personnel who all contribute to our students' wellbeing. Just like Illinois as a whole, it takes many skills and roles to keep a school running and to build the next generation of outstanding Illinoisans. Congratulations to today's honorees and on behalf of the State of Illinois, thank you for your service."
 
The Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards recognize the people who make education in Illinois so incredible.  Please help us in celebrating Mrs. Fountas and Mr. Steele!  Congratulations to them both!  There are no two people more deserving of this honor.

7th Grade Science - PLTW + Snap Circuits

This week in 7th Grade Science, our young engineers participated in a week long lesson on circuits by utilizing the curriculum from Project Lead The Way (PLTW).  Students were able to use engineering practices to create and examine various types of circuits by utilizing "Snap Circuits" to analyze how electrical current flows across series, parallel, and combination circuits under various working loads.
