Elementary Art Fair
All are invited to attend the Elementary Art Fair on Thursday, May 11th from 6-8pm, showcasing the work of every student. Artists in grades 2-4 selected one work from the year to display. Kindergarten and 1st grade artists will be surprised to see which art was selected for them by their art teacher Mrs. Chelmecki. Observe the works on display as you complete a family scavenger hunt!

Spring Orchestra Concert
Thank you to our orchestra members and Mrs. Follin for putting on an outstanding spring concert yesterday. The performances were excellent, and it was nice seeing our students recognized for their hard work and dedication to the orchestra program. Special thanks to our 8th grade students for their participation in orchestra since 4th grade. Also, thank you to our 8th grade students for presenting Mrs. Follin with a token of their appreciation. Great job, Hornets!
Highlands Preschool Registration
We are very excited to be expanding our Early Childhood Education program to include a limited number of tuition-based students for the 2023-24 school year. If you may be interested in this program for your child, please read the information below and register using the provided link. Applications received by Friday, May 12th will be given priority. Families will be notified on Monday, May 22 if their child has been placed in a class or is on the waitlist. If you know of a neighbor or friend who may be interested but does not receive emails from D106, please pass this information along.
The District 106 Early Childhood Education Program immerses children in a play-based, student-centered environment to maximize student learning, growth, and development. Daily instruction targets all areas of development with a strong focus on literacy, math, language, and social-emotional development. Our ECE classrooms are staffed by licensed teachers with specialized training and certifications in early childhood, special education, and English language development. Additionally, related services (speech/language, occupational therapy, and physical therapy) are integrated into the classroom. Given our staff’s qualifications and specialized training, the Highlands ECE program provides a unique opportunity for our youngest learners to thrive. Below are more details about the program:
- Participation is limited to children living within the LaGrange Highlands attendance area.
- Priority will be given to students who are 4 or 5 and are not yet eligible for kindergarten. (Three-year-olds are welcome to apply but will only be considered if all 4 and 5-year-olds have a spot.)
- The AM section meets from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. five days per week. The PM section meets from 12:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. five days per week.
- All sections are a blended classroom experience with low student-to-teacher ratios.
- Attendance days follow the District 106 student attendance calendar.
- We anticipate having approximately 24 tuition-based spots available. If we receive more applicants than available spots, a lottery will be used.
- The yearly tuition is $4,250.

WSCAE Art Show
On Saturday, April 29th, students from Highlands had their artwork on display as part of the West Suburban Consortium for Academic Excellence (WSCAE) 7th annual Student Art Expo. This free event took place at the Cheney Mansion in Oak Park. 500 pieces of artwork created by local elementary and middle school students from 56 schools in 15 school districts were on display. Congratulations to the following students: Alexandra Brubaker, Gillian John, Elizabeth Salerno, Emily Edell, Taylor Thalji, Ava Dodero, Thomas Munizzo, Mubaraka Al-Qamari, and Haley Schneider. Great work everyone and such an honor!
Caring for our Earth
Kindergarteners had fun making an art project while learning about our earth's natural resources. They learned about land, water, and air pollution as well as the journey of trash to a landfill. They are ready to take care of our planet by recycling, reusing items and reducing trash.
7th Grade Science - Balloon Race Cars
In 7th grade Science, our young engineers designed, tested, and raced their balloon race cars in some amazing competitions. The racers built these air powered cars to analyze the effects of Newton's 3 Laws of Motion and Friction and Force as they propelled their vehicles across a mock race track!
Cloud Watchers
The third graders are becoming expert meteorologists in science! They are identifying and sketching the clouds they see when they attend science class. They are learning the differences between all of the different clouds and how the water cycle works too!
Wind Ensemble Travels to Vandercook College of Music
The Wind Ensemble (7th and 8th grade band students) spent a wonderful afternoon at Vandercook College of Music. We participated in a clinic with Professor Stacey Dolan, working one on one with her on our upcoming concert music. We saw so much musical growth in just one afternoon! Thank you Educational Foundation for sponsoring this clinic and the lunch we enjoyed before hand.

Landscape Maintenance Application
Notice: A fertilizer/herbicide application will be made to district turf & landscape bed areas on or around Friday afternoon, April 14th, 2023. Weather may affect the exact time of the application. The fertilizer/herbicide for this application is defined as any herbicide, fertilizer, or other compound designed to promote healthy turfgrass and ornamentals.
