The 6th grade band had a wonderful morning spent with professional musicians from the Chicago area. We spent time playing as a full group and also in sectionals with our master class teachers. Thank you to the Educational Foundation for funding such a great event. I love when we can open up the musical world to our students here at Highlands!
This past Saturday Intermediate Orchestra and Concert Orchestra performed at the Band-O-Rama and Orchestra Festival at Wilkins Junior High. Both ensembles received a "superior" rating which is the highest rating given. Both orchestras had the opportunity to work with a clinician on the pieces they performed. We're looking forward to hearing the orchestras perform these pieces plus more at their upcoming May Spring Concert!
6th grade students have been working hard to explain the Chicagohenge/Manhattanhenge phenomenon! In class last week students used year long data to determine hours of daylight vs. darkness from a given location on Earth. We determined that for thousands of years the same patterns have existed and proved the connection between angle of sunlight and the hours of daylight. Students developed the correlation that the higher the angle of the sun, the more hours of daylight since the Sun’s path is larger. Today in class we created a 3D model to measure the path of sunlight to further prove our idea! Today we used lots of measuring, connecting previous ideas, as well as discussion. The rest of this week we will use our data to figure out more about seasons and how and WHY they differ as we orbit the Sun.
Our big question for tomorrow: If March and September have equal amounts of daylight (proven from videos and labs), how come those months have such different temperatures/characteristics?
On Saturday, April 13th Highland's Singers Brynn Halm (4th), Cora Jones (5th), and Luci Nash (6th) attended the ILMEA General Music Festival at Liberty Junior High School in New Lenox. They were joined with 82 other 4th-6th grade singers in our region for a day of singing, culminating in a performance of four songs. Included in the performance were drumming, Orff, ukulele, and folk dancing ensembles. Congrats, ladies!

To celebrate our many multilingual students, we sent home posters to over 140 students that are multilingual and come from one of at least 30 different language backgrounds. Our theme is “We All Smile in the Same Language!” We are thrilled to have received posters back from so many families! Thank you!
The posters will be displayed in school and serve as an opportunity for each student to share and celebrate their multilingual background with their peers and foster a sense of pride and belonging among our students and community. This special display will remain all month in the Elementary hallway between the office and the MPR. We are also excited to share the Middle School students’ posters which are displayed digitally on the large screens in the MS Commons.
We are thankful for the many families that submitted their family poster to help us celebrate your multilingual family and recognize the many languages that our students are loved in.
As we head into Spring Break....our young 7th grade scientists put Newton's First Law of Motion in action with our lab on Crash Test Dummies. Students discussed and calculated mass, acceleration, speed, and engineered a safety harness to keep up our passengers from flying over a wall! We even made graphs and worked on simulators to see how forces are applied to move heavy loads.Great results and real life skills on the importance of wearing your seat belts!

In early March, 35 band and orchestra students participated in the LT solo and ensemble festival.
